Melbourne restaurants open on Monday nights

UPDATED 29/08/11: more than doubled the length of the list from 52 restaurants to 107!

I've been meaning to write this post for over a year, but was prompted to do so today when my lovely friend H was racking her brains on Twitter trying to think of a nice restaurant where she could have a birthday dinner next Monday. Given that so many restaurants are closed on Monday nights (the traditional hospo night off), finding somwhere good to eat can prove a challenge.

So I thought I'd dedicate this post to listing Melbourne restaurants that are open for dinner on Mondays - and I'll do my best to keep the post updated. I've done a quick sweep of restaurants I can think of to get the list started, but if you can think of any other places in Melbourne to include (or if you know that one of the places listed is no longer open on Monday nights) please leave a comment letting me know and I'll update the list.

Oh, and for those who didn't see me note it on Twitter/Facebook, I thought I'd just mention in passing that Monday was the four year anniversary of the start of Melbourne Gastronome. Thanks to all for reading!

I'll leave it to my Nonno (pictured here celebrating his 90th birthday on the weekend) to blow out the candles... :)

What about Becco? Located next-door to Gingerboy.

I know Chowhound in Northcote definitely isn't!!!! That will teach me for rocking up without checking opening hours. Thai Nee Cafe in Brunswick is open and they do a killer Tom Yum.

Great list! I've actually struggled more with finding restaurants on a Sunday night - our anniversary a few years back fell on a Sunday and it seemed like everywhere I was keen on was closed! then again, they do need a break!!

Excellent list! For an out-of-towner looking for somewhere decent to eat on a Monday night, this will be very useful.

Good call. This is an excellent subject for a blog post!
My out-of-towner hospo buddies often feel neglected coming to Melbs on Monday nights so this is great!
PS: City Wine Shop and the Euro always make great 7-days stand-bys as does Little Press.
PS: Happy birthday MG!

The place I've ended up deciding on is De Los Santos on Brunswick st. Open Monday nights, good space for a group and they have great tapas. It's not quite MoVida, but it is a fraction of the price!

Chocolate Budda?

Brilliant/ly useful. Out-of-town hospo types like myself and the hubby are very grateful. Our long overdue, long gourmand weekend just got that bit easier (or harder depending on how you look at it)

Hey Claire, check out http://scarfcommunity.org/

Just read about them in the Age. They "borrow" restaurants from generous owners outside of their normal trading hours and host these Monday night dinners as part of an outreach and training programme.

Its a transient form of dining but for a good cause. And its a Monday night alternative thats worth considering.

Great list. Hope you keep it updated. So many times I've had overseas visitors to entertain on a Monday.

Hi Clare, What about a special list of vegetarian places open on Monday. Most Monday nights I go running with a vegetarian friend and she ends up eating a bowl of fries most of the time. I'm keen to do the Meat Free Monday thing with her (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meatless_Monday) but it's surprising how many dedicated Vegetarian places are shut on the one day of the week that has an ongoing campaign in favour of them.

Your website is a great idea for visitors to Melbourne, particularly if one needs to eat reasonably on a Monday night. But before I arrived I found our that:
- Giuseppe Arnaldo & Sons at Southbank has been closed for ages;
- Mezzo Bar & Grill advises on its website (accessed directly from your website) that is is closed on Mondays.
But still helpful in finding a suitable nosh spot!!
