How funny, I just had my 27-going-on 7 party on the weekend, and made the Pirate Cake from the new book, which isn't quite as good as the original but it was a cool cake (I couldn't get the old book in time).
I'm jealous you got the castle! I got the swimming pool every year, but always thought the jelly/cake combo was pretty great. I too got freaked out by the duck - chips and popcorn not right. We always wanted the dump truck as it meant you got a whole lot of lollies which we were never allowed!

You were so lucky to get the castle! That was my dream. Year in, year out I got the swimming pool cake, mum reusing the same figurines and cocktail umbrellas each year. I actually thought the jelly/cake combination was excellent. For my 27th birthday party on the weekend, I had a "27 going on 7" party and made the Pirate cake ship from the new Women's Weekly. I must say I rate the new book too, but maybe not as much. Agreed that popcorn duck looks gross.

Natalie, are you sure you can't see the album? Cos if you've successfully joined the group I can't think of any good reason why you wouldn't be able to see the photos (you need to scroll down past the comments on the wall to see the photos).

I stumbled upon the group (and then the link to this article) by chance, and almost clicked away, until i saw the duck cake photo in the posted items and suddenly remembered this wonderful book! Hi,
Thanks for the cake blog came across it while trying to find a copy of the train recipe from the original book. Have the new version of the book but it is not as good as the original, I think they've dumbed it down a bit. My mum has lost her original somewhere over the years having lent it to someone long forgotten. Worked in the UK for a few years as a nanny and always wowed the parents with my cakes as inspired by the original book. In august this year my foster son turned one and I made a gorgeous ladybug cake for him. And have also made a few cakes for friends from original book that I borrow from a friend. Have been trying to track down a copy of original but haven't had much luck. If I ever work out how face book works I will post some photos in your cake group,

wow that looks great... touched a chord no doubt. i have fond memories of the book even though i'm not sure i ever got any of the cakes. many friends still inspired by it.

it makes me want to break my facebook ban to join. and your david and camy's group.... sigh. but i must stay strong.

Man, I wish I was lucky enough to have birthday cakes like that when I was a kid. My Mum was a cooking expert not a baker and used to give Chinese cooking lessons in shopping centres.

Thank you Mutemonkey for the trip down memory lane. I must remember to tell my mother NEVER to give away her book. These cakes may have skipped half a generation, but I think when our generation has kids they will be recycled all over again (the cakes that is....)

I have inherited my family's copy of this book and made a couple of the cakes for Michael's birthdays. I did actually make the train cake once (with only one trailer) and the stress of it has prevented me from attempting any more of these - be warned!!!

Now I'm heading over to Facebook to hunt down this group of yours...
