229 Gertrude St, Fitzroy (map)

Gab, my sassy and very funny hairdresser of the last five years, just moved to Sydney and so I've been looking for a new place to get my locks chopped. Z from work said I HAD to try the guys she goes to on the corner of Smith and Gertrude Streets at Red Room, so I went along the other weekend and was very happy with the job Matt did. Afterwards I was wandering along Gertrude and wandered into Gertrude Street Enoteca on a whim.
I loved the Pablo Neruda poem written up on the blackboard. :)
GSE was one of those places I'd always meant to get around to visiting, but I don't spend that much time in Fitzroy these days. It's owned by James "Slow Food" Broadway and Brigitte "Epicure writer" Hafner. As its name suggests, the focus at GSE is on good wines and the list has many interesting/unusual entries. It was after 2:30pm when I went so although I was rather hungry I didn't want a large meal before my friend's dinner party that night. I looked at what the woman next to me was eating - it was exactly what I felt like!
Got a cheesy melt (mozzarella, tomato, basil plus they offered to sneak a slice of jamon on there too) and a glass of Chablis - both were excellent.
I wasn't in any rush, so stayed and read the Saturday papers, then rang a friend so that we could work through the General Knowledge crossword in our respective copies of the Age together. The nice guy behind the counter didn't mind at all that I was writing on their copy of the paper... but he did manage to talk me into getting this scrumptious raspberry danish too. Has anyone eaten from their proper meals menu? Next time I'm there I want to try the Vitello Tonnato. But as an impromptu snack venue, GSE gets the thumbs up :)
I too love Gertrude Street Enoteca, reading the paper, sipping Chablis on a hot Saturday afternoon. Il tuo blog e' fantastico!!
